WHY is this here, What's It All About?
We care about music -
all styles of music! We like to share the
experience of finding and hearing new or old music
that we haven't heard before, or maybe haven't heard
in many years, but without ignoring the old
favorites also.
Our goal is to
provide THE most comprehensive and highest quality streams available in
each Genre that we are building over time.
You'll hear songs that you know, songs that are new
to you (whenever they are from), and maybe songs
that you have not heard in many years because they
don't get played on radio outlets.
We are not about
radio, personalities, formats, research, or other
common media presentations or segmentations.
We are more like a comprehensive library (or
archive) of music. Because of all of the legal
restrictions, we can't let you take each song out
for a listen like a book. So we work within
the legal limits to provide you with collections of
the music that we hope make sense.
Since you also
love music, we listen to you!
We use your feedback to provide options that make
sense to our Members. For example, we would
not want to build a stream of hits only that
competes directly with radio offerings, but we also
don't want to build an elitist offering of obscure
songs that only appeals to a few Members.
We'll work to achieve a balance that works.
This may lead us to offer several different
streaming variations within a genre, but adding each
new stream is costly, so we consider new options
carefully. Feel free to let us know what you
think works well, or what does not.
Think of CoolStreams more as a supplement to radio, rather than a
competitive option. Radio has its place for
serving some slice of music combined with news and
information, and we prefer to be the resource for
digging deeper into a musical area that you may have
been introduced to elsewhere. Yes, we know
that we are not completely there yet with every
artists and genre, but we continue to build in those
areas with your support!
Part of our "Mission"
is historical and archival. You'll find the
date of each release displayed in the player window
on most of our streams, and our streaming library is
uniquely built around the date of release of the
recording, when available (primarily on music from
the 1950's to date). With popular / hit music,
we organize by the month and year that the song was
at its highest chart position (using the US national
charting information first, or UK or other country
data if more appropriate). This is the time
that you would most likely to have heard the song
(most often) played on the radio if you were
listening then. Of course, some of our streams
cover music that rarely if ever gets played on the
radio, and those offerings are organized by month
and year of release.

What's Different From
Radio or Other Streamers Here? We do not use
commercial radio techniques in our streams
(targeting specific songs to specific times or day
parts, song rotation or scheduling software, etc.).
Each song in our stream has an equal chance of
playing at any time, and, normally, the entire
playlist will be played before any song in the
playlist will repeat. The entire playlist is rebuilt after each complete cycle,
usually with new songs added and some songs
temporarily removed from play. Artists with
large catalogs are scheduled on a special rotation
system so that any one artist is not overly
represented at any one time. This does not
mean that you won't hear more Beatles songs than
Spanky & Our Gang songs in Lost Oldies for an
example, common sense prevails here since there
simply are more Beatles songs to choose from.
It does mean that if you listen to the complete
playlist from begining to end (perhaps, say, 100
hours - can you do it?) you will not hear all of the
Beatles songs in our library. If you listen to
the next full cycle of the playlist, you might hear
roughly the same number of Beatles songs again, but
you may hear some that were not in the prior
playlist, and not hear some that were. Then
again, if we decide to have a modern day Beatles
Bonfire, you might not hear any :). (If you
understand that last line, you are older than you
want to think you are)
We don't just hastily
rip CDs to throw in large numbers of songs, every
song on evey one of our playlists was listened to
and selected by the producer(s) of the Coolstream.
We also take special care to edit beginnings
and endings of selections when necessary to avoid
songs starting or ending abruptly, e.g. when they
are segued together.

Why not Free?
- Because the streams
are completely Ad-Free, no audio ads, no pop-up ads
from the player. Since there is no ad support,
we need your support!
- Because of the size of
our streams, our costs for storage, streaming, and
Royalties (that support the artists and labels) are
significant, so we have to ask for a modest
contribution, even for "Founding Members," for us to
be able to maintain and operate them. We keep
our costs as low as we possibly can to provide the
service at a good value to you the listener.
- Q: But there
are other ad-free, no cost services out there now.
A: Yes, since the beginning of the internet's
recent commercialization, there have been hordes of
"too good to be true" services that have come and
gone. Please take advantage of them and enjoy
them while you can. If you would like to be part
of building something with some lasting value and
staying power, please consider Membership support of
this service!

How Do I See What You Are
Playing? We don't just display a few pictures
of CDs or artists playing in the streams, you can see
the titles of all of the songs in each of our streams on
our artist pages (we do sometimes get behind, but we
complete the task). You can see each artist's page
by using the artist pages menus, and we hope to have a
complete playlist display for each stream soon. |
