	Feature Album: Shawn Mullins - 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor
Scott's Blog Notes: So I'm late on this one (released in February, 2006), and I meant to get to it much sooner, but so what - these songs have just gotten better since then.  Yes, I know that "Beautiful Wreck" was the song to push back then, so we'll go elsewhere for this one.  The songs on Shawn Mullins' 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor are all over the map, from folk & folk-rock to Alt-Country/Alt-Folk, even a little of the blues, and if you like a lot of stylistic range - or just like a lot of styles of music, like I do, you'll like this album also.  While I really like almost all of the songs on here, "Alaska" has me completely wrapped.  You know the first time you hear one of these types of songs - one where the notes and chords get inside and resonate with everything that you are about (and I'm referring to the music here, not the lyrics - I've never been to Alaska yet, maybe I should go :). It might have something to do with the banjo - while I'm usually not a big fan of trad banjo music, banjo accompanist on folk-rock/rock tracks just resonates with me to the point where I'll be compelled to fit together a long set of these soon - The Eagles' Midnight Flyer and America's Submarine Ladies are the first two all-time favs that I think of here.  Also in this set from this disc, the folk-rock "Cold Black Heart" (if it doesn't hit you at first, think "Matty Groves") and "All Fall Down" which is just an outright rocker with a very familiar chord progression (think Beatles, and others).  It's written elsewhere that Mullins was just too eclectic for the major label he landed on for a few albums before this, and probably could not have done an album like this there, so thanks then must go to Vanguard (and Lawrence Welk Jr.) for picking Shawn Mullins up and getting this album out here!  As for "Talkin' Goin' to Alaska Blues," I've got about another 995 plays to go before I start to get a bit tired of it.  (Note: "Alaska" was the pre-release title of track #6, now "Talkin' Goin' to Alaska Blues").

	Feature Album: Bill Leslie - I Am a River
Scott's Blog Notes: I was first introduced to Bill Leslie's music last year on his release "Peaceful Journey" which you can still hear in the Cool Age and MRI Coolstreams.  "I Am A River" is another fine album by Bill, but is, sadly, dedicated to the memory of Micheal O'Domhnaill (1951-2006) of Relativity, Nightnoise and the Bothy Band.  Bill Leslie's music was influenced by hearing Micheal O'Domhnaill & Nightnoise on a trip to Scotland.  He also writes on his web site bio: "I heard someone play the Celtic whistle on the side of the road near Inverness and fell in love with the haunting sound. No one in Raleigh [NC] could teach me how to play the whistle so I taught myself using books, cassettes and videotaped instructions."  Bill blends the Celtic whistle with his guitar playing on several tracks on "I Am A River," and along with vocals on a few tracks, creates a pleasant range of music from folk to New Age.  Also added this week, songs from recent releases by Shawn Mullins, Lindsey Buckingham, Ed Gerhard and Caufield, all which are upcoming features here, plus more from recent features Shawn Colvin, Dave Potts, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Duhks & others, plus a couple of personal favorites from John Denver & Joni Mitchell.
