Interview:
Ken Field
is a saxophonist, flautist,
percussionist, and composer. Since 1988 he has been a
member of the internationally acclaimed electrified
modern music ensemble
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, with whom he
has recorded eight CDs. In this 14 January 2007
interview he also discusses working with David
Greenberger, Oral Moses, and the group he leads; the
Revolutionary Snake Ensemble. RSE is a New
Orleans-inspired improvisational brass band. In
discussing Field's solo work we find the otherworldly
sounds he recorded in Roswell, NM did not have
extraterrestrial inspiration.

Outsight Radio
Interview:
Ken Field (Birdsongs of the Mesozoic,
Sesame Street) leaves behind his Apollonian cerebral music
to revel in the funkiness of a New Orleans brass band. Ken
Field's Revolutionary Snake Ensemble is a New Orleans brass
band that plays Sun Ra ("Calling All Demons"), James Brown
("Soul Power") as well as Scofield ("Some Nerve") besides
its own Big Easy- inspired originals. It is interesting
because this masterful sax man with a talent for the edgy
and progressive avant-garde music here subsumes his
particular side to incarnate a Mardi Gras mood with rhythm
music. Throughout there is a strong second-line style in the
tradition of Rebirth Brass Band and The Dirty Dozen Brass
Band. This is a party band with a great horn section. The
all-star Boston band includes members of Either/Orchestra,
Hot Tamale Brass Band, Binary System, Clem Snide and more.
In this interview Field discusses RSE and other projects.

Outsight Radio
Interview:
Ken Field
Multi-instrumentalist and
composer Ken Field on his saxophone quartet Dig Big and
other numerous avant-jazz and soundtrack side projects
outside of
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. Since the late
'80s, Field has plied his trade in the experimental ensemble
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. He appears on a few of their
releases and has toured extensively with the group. His solo
discography beings with Subterranea (O.O.Discs), which
exhibits multi-tracked saxophone improvisations. Field
recorded this project largely in a Roswell, NM, underground
chamber. He performed for President Bill Clinton, appears on
Peter Wolf's Longline (Reprise, 1996), and has been a
composer-in-residence on both sides of the Atlantic. Ken
Field composes music for animation, film, and video. His
music is heard regularly on the Sesame Street television
show. HBO, The Movie Channel, and PBS have used his
soundtrack compositions. Field performs and records with the
Bad Art Ensemble, the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, Willie
Loco Alexander, and leads the
Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, a horn and percussion festival band.
