Magellan RoadMate 700 Vehicle GPS with Windshield Mount

I originally looked at the
idea of getting a factory GPS in the car we
purchased this past spring, but I read reviews about
the
RoadMate 700 GPS unit that suggested that it was
better, plus being portable between vehicles, so I held
off. I finally
purchased the Magellan
RoadMate 700 GPS before our last vacation trip, and
have used it extensively in both familiar and
un-familiar areas. It is extremely accurate - ok, not
100% accurate at all times (it gets my own home's
location on the right side of the road, but about 100
yards off its actual location) - but better than I
expected.

| The most
interesting feature, I think, is the
Magellan's ability to recalculate the route (to
your programmed destination) if you intentionally or
accidentally get off the route that it first
calculates for you. I have tried it on routes
that I know well, taking my own short cuts vs. it's
route, and it eventually figures out the route that
you are taking. More useful, of course, is its
ability to get you back on track if you need to jump
off the main highway or take a detour due to bad
traffic, etc. We used it for this several
times in upper Michigan this past summer, without
ever feeling that it was not keeping us on track.

was when I ignored it
once because I thought differently about what it told me
to do - I was wrong, but it then helped me turn around
and get back on the highway in the right direction (and
it doesn't nag you about making that stupid mistake like
your co-pilot might!).
The windshield mount is
easy and works great - I have used it in 3 different
cars with no problems at all. And my
RoadMate 700 came with an indoor power adapter that
allows you to pre-program a destination out of the car -
you can even see its route ahead of time if you use it
on a deck or porch where you can get the satellite lock.
One thing I did not have much luck with was trying to
re-program the route it chose - that seemed like too
much trouble - its easier to pick a different point
between places and then program the final destination
from that intermediate point. |

The
RoadMate 500 model is a few hundred dollars less,and
the
RoadMate 300 model even less than that, but it
didn't make sense to me to go with the 500 or 300 since
it does not contain the entire US as the
RoadMate 700 does, and you would have to purchase
additional updates for new areas, etc.
However, if you're absolutely certain that you'll only
ever need it in a specific area, then by all means check
out the lower priced
RoadMate 500 model or
RoadMate 300 model.
